Briefly...
1. The prices I am hearing of are more like $20,000. Still no small amount. Financing may be required to pay for that instead of the monthly electric bill.
2. The solar system is capitalized into the value of the house.
3. Maintenance: I see this as the biggest challenge for widespread off-the-grid. Entrepreneurs need to provide the service (see below).
Here's the point: the state government is undertaking to change laws, establish low-cost financing, and do all manner of what ever it takes to put geothermal as the major, if not only, source of electricity.
I see this as an unbalanced approach. In my opinion, as I've indicated before, there may well be a role for geothermal. However, talk of 500 up to 1,000 MW is way out of balance and ignores all other possibilities.
