Bringing Firearms When Moving to B.I.
#84
Kelena,
quote:
The main means of defense I choose for my home is the police. If I heard a noise at my window, the first thing I would reach for is a phone, and not a gun. That would be the second thing. I support my local police and am willing to pay for a more numerous force.
The police can be the main means of overall defense for your home but as a deterrent to ne'er–do–wells who are afraid of eventually getting caught and going to jail and by reducing the pool of active ne'er–do–well criminals by deterrence or removing from the street. During an active incident where you have reason to fear a criminal presence at your home, get the gun first and then call the police. What is the average response time for lower HPP at 2am? I agree that a larger police force would be worth some added cost if what is there is too busy to actively follow up on residential property crimes (burglaries)in Puna. I'll pass on your general liberal rant toward the views of the more right wing branch of the Republican party.
quote:
The expensive illness our country is suffering from is this Ayn Rand/Mark-of-Cain notion that we are NOT our brother's keeper.........when taken to its extreme results in something that is NOT in our self-interest(bold added by oink)
I agree, when taken to it's extreme.
quote:
When every American harbors multiple guns, a more violent society results. Americans can't handle guns. We've proven it time and time again. The Swiss all have guns but they don't murder each other. It's us. We can't handle it.
No, I don't agree with the first three sentences. I do agree that societal violence is part of our culture. I think that is part of our culture that is probably the dark side of the independent and aggressive get it done attitude that made us great. I hate to see us lose that. The greater American culture will likely always have an aspect of violence until we are all enslaved. It's not the guns. We can handle them but we need to embrace education about them. The NRA Eddie Eagle program is good.
quote:
The larger point here is that from the standpoint of violence, other than domestic violence, Hawaii is a remarkably peaceable state.
That is good. It's cultural and IMHO has no relation to guns.
quote:
It is peaceable in part because crazy people, like the one who shot Gabrielle Gifford, don't have free and easy access to guns, especially those that can fire off multiple rounds (more than would ever be needed to kill a pig). Our crazy people just hang out harmlessly at the Cash & Carry
The Gabrielle Gifford incident was certainly unfortunate but was an aberration. There are probably valuable lessons to be learned from that. Banning guns and/or magazines is not the lesson to be learned. Perhaps turning most of the mentally ill out onto the streets like was done many years ago was a mistake. Are they better off living in the woods or under bridges etc. (or hanging at the Cash & Carry)?
quote:
It is peaceable as well because fewer people look at guns as a form of recreation, other than for hunting.
Really? I think you will find that people engaged in competitive shooting sports are some of the most law abiding in the country.
quote:
There is a sort of equilibrium here that avoids extremes in anything other than surfing.
Again, Really?? That was a joke, right? I think that is in the eye of the beholder.
quote:
This would include feteshizing guns the way a dowager does dildoes. Feteshizing guns is as American as a frozen Mrs. Smith's apple pie.
I don't get that. Guns are tools. They are generally highly engineered, finely crafted pieces of machinery. That is something for which they can be admired along with the integral part they have played in our history. A fetish? No!
quote:
But it is a form of behavior that is at odds with the reason that many people come to Hawaii: to escape the mainland and its madness.
In regards to the fetish reality you inhabit I agree. These are turbulent times and Hawaii may provide some semblance of a haven from it. I hope so.
quote:
I even regret bringing my flute. It disturbs the peace.
If you play it that badly, I also regret your bringing it.
quote:
As for relocating guns, I would only bring what I need to kill a pig, if you can bring yourself to do such a thing.
And a goat, pheasant, chukar, mongoose, axis deer, your cat and dog and the occasional robber, should he wish to do me harm. Oh yeah and those damned pesky little cans.
quote:
And just accept that because you contemplate moving to a blue state, that some things are just not as welcome here as they may be where you came from
Nope, this is all the USA and I'm a free citizen.
quote:
it would sort of be like me walking in downtown Charlotte holdings hands with my (so far imaginary) boyfriend. I could probably do it, but I would open myself up to scorn.
Charlotte has been growing and changing. You and your squeeze might be ok there now.
