Bringing Firearms When Moving to B.I.

Actually I thought they usually knew their attacker

[ I know three women who have been attacked when they had a gun in their purse. Did it help them? No, it gave the creep a weapon to use against them, which they did.
Really? You are very unique if you personally know 3 women that match that scenario.
quote:
Martial arts training would have served them better.
Maybe, but only extensive and constant practice will be of much use in such scenarios. I am a proponent of active resistance is such cases.
quote:
As far as resisting tyranny goes, that is a nice delusion to believe in. Sure you may have your Alamo moment and get to feel like John Wayne but in reality you have no chance against even the weaponry of the local police, much less the federal government, if they are intent on eliminating you.
Correct, one man alone has no chance against such organized opposition. I don't envision such a scenario. I believe in a case of attempted tyranny the tyrant would be opposed by many. As I previously stated, I don't see the imminent threat you appear to see.
quote:
I had a friend, a very well armed Vietnam combat vet who had no compunction about defending himself or killing others if needed, who tried. His Alamo experience lasted less than fifteen minutes and he was going up against a small, rural county sheriff's department.
Sounds like a man with serious problems, possibly resulting from his war experience. I hope you attempted to intervene before he reached that desperate place. He must have suffered greatly.
quote:
As for home defense, a sawed off shotgun is far more effective than a handgun. Just the sound of a round being chambered is enough to deter most criminals.
I'm a firm believer in legal short barreled shot guns for home defense.
quote:
Plus you don't have to be as accurate.
Not really true. At the ranges likely to occur in a home defense situation the shot will not have expanded substantially so some accuracy is a necessity. I like the shotgun for home defense to be loaded with bird shot which would still be very effective at close range and it is not as likely to travel through as many walls if the intended target is missed. Longer range shooting in such home defense situations would be inappropriate.
quote:
As is mentioned elsewhere here, the majority of crime in the area is burglary, not robbery. If you aren't home, it doesn't matter if you have a gun handy beyond the fact that in all likelihood your gun will end up in the hands of the criminal.
Not if stored properly while you are gone. Besides, I recall several recent reports of incidents in the Puna area that were not simple unoccupied burglaries
quote:
I am neither for or against guns. They are just inanimate tools given purpose by the individual holding them. But I do find that most of the rationales offered for their justification come from those who live their lives in fear.
I also find your rationales lacking. I don't live my life in fear. I have carried a gun daily for about 30 years. It is a tool I'm comfortable with. I do try to be aware of my surrounding as I go through life, as should we all. Of course no one is perfect in that regard.

Very well said.
Better that some I guess.

A friend of a friend of mine was blitz attacked in a restroom at a truck stop (in Ohio as it happened). She was brutally stabbed to death by a stranger. I don't see how a gun would have helped unless she had it in hand while she did her business and washed her hands.
I guess we will never know. I don't see the down side to her having been armed. She might be alive today.
quote:
Martial arts, yes, or maybe the old tried and true which is women stick together and don't go in potentially unsafe places alone.
I have no problem with martial arts knowledge. However, I have seen a number of petite women who knew a little martial arts and as a result were overconfident to the point of not using good common sense. Your old tried and true method is good common sense.
quote:
But this is getting far from Puna ...
What about Dana Ireland? Should she have been riding her bike gun in hand?
Maybe not in hand but if she had a small one in her pocket she might be alive. Again, we will never know.
