Today is the Hawaii caucus 6 PM, anyone can vote!
#68
A contested convention could be very interesting. My understanding is that the Republican party in each state has slightly different rules, but it breaks down into a convention where there are some delegates who are free to vote for anyone they like, delegates who have to vote for a certain candidate on the first round only, and delegates who are committed to a certain candidate come hell or high water. Neither party has had a contested convention with multiple rounds of voting accompanied by all kinds of back room haggling in decades, very few people in the upper realms of either party have ever participated in a contested convention, most of them were adolescents last time there was one, or for the really old guys, college students.

Several articles I read a few months ago speculated that Paul wouldn't bolt the party or contest the election for fear the party would then punish his son, Rand Paul, in terms of support in future elections. I don't know enough about how Paul's mind works to speculate on that, but I also think he only has so much control over the actions of his supporters at the convention, I'm not convinced he is the one orchestrating the push to send Paul delegates to the convention in large numbers.

American politics would be my favorite soap opera/drama if the consequences didn't have the potential to be so critical for our country.
