Being a mid-40's white guy I've had no problem mixing with the people that live here. This goes for the retired japanese guy who was our neighbor when we live in Hilo to the young and same age as me "locals" who I worked with at Target when I took a second job on the overnight crew there. You might get the stink eye and some glares if you show up at a non-touristy location looking like a tourist but that is as violent as I've seen it. The biggest issues I've heard about recently where at a remote "party" location and a lot of alcohol and young testosterone was involved.
Matter of fact the only person on the island I've had a serious issue with was a middle aged relocated (from southern california) person doing studies at UHH that was a roommate in Hilo for a while. He was a pompous ass that no one in the house like though so I don't take it personal.
