Why "surely" must their be a road to divert to just because there is a fatality? Have you not yet figured out that you live on an island and a rural one at that? Usually there IS only one way to/from a place.
A lo of people that sat in that traffic did not have to. The police dept. has a notification system called Nixle that sends out messages to people's cell phones and email to let them know of accidents and road closures. Civil Defense has a similar program called Citywatch that sends out alerts in the event of natural disasters. Both programs are free, both have been around for years, and both take about 15 seconds to sign up on the dept.'s respective web sites. So unless you were caught in the immediate aftermath there was no need to sit in traffic.
The issue of unsafe drivers is a bigger and much tougher one to tackle. That stretch of road is bad. Short of the state doing something (which I don't see happening any time soon) it falls to each of us to be more careful, which is much harder to do than bitching about other people.
