1. When my wife and I dove at Kapoho, we used fins. The current between connected pools can be strong. I wouldn't have been able to beat it without the fins. Go toward high tide, will make going between pools much easier. We left our shoes on the shore, no problems. They were old beat up shoes.
2. You can hike in to Green Sands, but it's not a nice hike. SUPER fine dust blowing all over you the whole way. Wear pants, boots, long sleeves, and a hood if you got one. DO NOT try and drive it with a rental car, 4WD or not. OR, you can use the local guy I met, who drove us OUT (we had hiked IN), along with a Korean couple he has previously brought in. He also does fishing tours off Ka Lae. I got his number, email me if you want it.
To add, if you are down there (Ka Lae), summon up the courage to jump off. It's a blast. Have someone take a picture as you are halfway down.
