Tom and Pam, I am also part of Puna Baptist Church and we will pray for you and Pam faithfully. Since moving here to the Puna area, I have developed some precious friendships with other women. One in particular also has some cognitive dysfunction and one thing I do to help her is take her on hikes. Our hikes used to be more challanging but she had too many problems so I take her on flat ground walks at least once a week, sometimes more. It takes her away from the house and clears out her mind and she and I talk, share and laugh. I noticed with my friend, she suffers momentary episodes of depression and the walking helps her so much.
I pray that Pam might be so fortunate to have a close friend who will take time to take her for a drive or a walk if she is able. The goal for me is to let my friend know she is still beautiful, priceless and very much a part of our lives. There will be no improvement for my friend and I do grieve for her. Her husband suffers too but he chooses to be in denial, not accepting that his wife will never be that strong, athletic companion he loved. So I pray for him too because he suffers in a different way, probably similar to what you are experiencing.
Find the inner strength within your self to be strong for your wife. She will need you during this time. And please know, as a Christian, I personally know of a Strength and a Love that surpasses anything we can find in ourselves. Call on Jesus...it's an option that will help you and Pam.
