A Big Island man who fell from a rocky area and struck his head while fishing near Hawaiian Paradise Park on Tuesday has died, according to reports from the scene.
Hawaii News Now has learned that a body recovery operation involving a helicopter was conducted at dawn on Wednesday, shortly after a volunteer firefighter located the body on a pebble beach in the area and called in his position.
According to Big Island officials, the man was fishing at around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday when he fell, hit his head, and was reported to be floating face down in the water. A search and rescue operation at the time of the incident was hampered by high surf, strong winds, and poor visibility.
Sources at the scene say the man may have fallen as much as 30 feet and was found between 300 and 400 yards from where he fell.
