Saturday there were 2 kids who were trying to ride the waves right there at the cliffs at the end of Maku'u, one on a surfboard and one on a boogie board. They had to jump down into the water about 6 feet to get in. The waves were coming from about 3 different directions and really pounding the rocks, plus the edges had wicked rip currents sucking out. Their friend thought better of going in and stayed on shore. I had no idea how they were going to get back out of the water in those conditions. There were a lot of people watching, I think most of us were checking if our cell phone worked if we needed to call 911. It is one thing to slip and fall in there, it is a whole lot different to get into the water in hazardous conditions by choice.
