NANAWALE ESTATES, Hawaii —Hawaii County police officers are trying to piece together what led to the killing of a Big Island man Monday afternoon.
Police ended up with a pair of crime scenes after they were called to a home in Nanawale Estates, located on the southeastern side of the island.
After receiving an initial report of a shooting, officers arrived at the home and found a man inside, dead from gunshot wounds.
After finding the man's body, police began a search for the suspect. That search took them to Hawaiian Paradise Park, where just a short time later they had a man in custody.
"Apparently, the subject was an acquaintance of a resident here. Information police developed brought us to this location," said Lt. Gregory Esteban, with Hawaii Co. Police Department.
Esteban added that the suspect was arrested without incident and is now behind bars. He reportedly lives in Nanawale Estates as well.
Nanawale Estates is a small community on the Big Island, but it has been frequently in the news. Even though there are only about 1,400 people who live there, it's a place where several serious crimes have happened in just the past few years.
Those crimes include a major meth lab bust and other murders.
In the latest Big island case, the suspect hasn't been charged yet, but police expect to file murder charges in the slaying.
Personally, I'm getting totally disgusted with these ongoing murders, and all criminal acts in Puna. For those who chant, "leave Puna alone, we want it to stay the same, etc.", NO thank you.
I wish it was the same when I was a keiki, when you didn't have to roll your windows up and lock your doors driving through Pahoa town where they piss and puke on the sidewalks! Leave Puna the way it is, and we'll get more and more of this kind of behavior. Where did the old values go? Where did we go so wrong in Puna? (Rhetoric, obviously) What is the value of a life nowadays? Unbelievable.
Sickened by all of this. (Apologies for the rant. Really getting frustrated with ALL this going on in Puna.) God help us all.[!]JMO.
