I'm in Volcano, at about 3,800', and while the altitude and cold hold the mosquitoes down, we do get them. Both kinds, the daytime kind and the nighttime kind. Dusk is the worst for me.
My neighbors and I are pretty diligent about filling tire ruts that can pool water, etc., not so much for our own sake, but to try to help preserve the native honeycreepers, which have been decimated by mosquito-borne avian malaria. The main reason the remaining population is mostly up at our altitude is simply that the mosquito population is so reduced up here.
