Since the emergence of the 442 go for broke regiment....and folks like Daniel Innouye, George Ariyoshi, etc....the Hawaii power grab has always been between Haoles and Hawaii-born Japanese. Study your history and you will see how race continues to play a major role in the power dynamics of Hawaii. Haoles own the banks and businesses. Japanese control the government. Or they control the legislature at least. Hawaiians have a nice trump card, but in the end, it's still a struggle between Rich connected haoles versus somewhat rich, connected Japanese born in Hawaii. Be sure to make the distinction related to class. Because there are many poor haole and poor Hawaii-born Japanese folks in Hawaii. It's a power grab for the rich and connected....whose players (mostly) turn out to represent the two aforementioned groups. Haole men love Asian Women. Japanese men love haole women.
