Apparently this is a classic case of domestic abuse. The deceased had quite a history as an abuser:

The poor children who witnessed this incident, and the other domestic violence incidents he was accused of, including threatening to kill a former girlfriend and her children.

Perhaps this is going to end up as a self defense case. JMO.
