I think cars do OK because they tend to dry quickly after the rains, and air can circulate around and through them when parked. After 4 years here, I found a little rust on my rear wiper arm, but that was easily remedied. One thing that we have had rust problems with is the inside of our gas grills. Let me tell you, it's disconcerting when you flip a burger and the entire burner underneath suddenly collapses!
In terms of clothes, keep one set of "good" clothes and winter clothes on hand for your trips back to the mainland. When on Island, what you'd consider "business casual" on the mainland is considered almost formal wear over here. Shorts, T-shirts, aloha shirts, slippa's and a nice pair of jeans and khaki's will be appropriate in almost ever situation.
As Carey says, keep your closets (and entire house) well ventilated, wipe down your leather items regularly, and accept the fact that some stuff just doesn't like being here (books, for one...)
