Rob - What Rainbow Alley has said is true if the same one we know of, and there were some real concerns, especially with parents of children in the neighborhood.
There was also (much) debate in our neighborhood about this person and the status of the registration. As for as I have heard (and I called the State myself), this person completed the requirements thing in TX, and was not required to register in the state of Hawaii. The alleged incidents in Hawaii, I do not know what the outcome ever was. There was so much rumor and innuendo around it that it was hard to know what was true and what was not.
I can understand why parents get wound up. Sexual predators of children in your neighborhood is a scary thought.
I stepped away from the debate in our neighborhood when I heard that directly from the State office, and had taken the steps I could do to verify or nullify the rumors. I have no small children, and this person moved out of our neighborhood.
There was no action to actually take other than urging people to be aware (the usual information that the SO program in Hilo provides) of people in general who interact with your kids.
My take on it is anyone should not let your children be alone with people you do not know well or trust... and although most SO crimes are committed by people you do trust, be aware of changes in behavior with your children and if they ask odd questions be aware of what they may be trying to tell you. Pay attention to your children not matter who the adult is! Also if an adult asks odd things of the children, hear that warning bell.
As for the outing, the sex offender list in Hawaii is easy enough to use and there are also national databases that can be used.
and just FYI - I was under the impression that once you were listed as a SO, it required you to register for the rest of your life in whatever state you live in. We found this to be not true in all situations with previously convicted sex offenders. I do not know what triggers the "registration" or "non-registration" part.
