Kona side is probably more beginner friendly- more breaks and wave variety, sandy bottom in places. Honoli'i is the only real beginner surf spot on east side and can get crowded and territorial, although most of the time the water there is full of smiles and aloha. She'll have fun anywhere. But as was previously mentioned, beware. Catching one wave changes you forever. Catch two or three and you can become addicted for life. And what a wonderful addiction it can be.
