I can not believe this could be true here in Hawaii. Unless you can provide some proof I will just assume you are making it up.
Anyone who moved here from somewhere else probably sees the high level of interpersonal violence between and within various local cultural factions. Personal beatings are fairly common and attacks with a machete happen too often. Can you imagine how much worse it could be if any thug with overhanging tires could just stop by a pawn shop and pick up a gun whenever he gets angry at his girlfriend or mom? I think there's good reason to have guns be difficult to acquire here, and those of you who feel naked without them should be able to get them if you go through the process and particularly if you are well trained and keep your weapons secure. It's hard to trust the police to follow through on a lot of the crime here, like that escaped convict they were just told where and when to find and they couldn't manage to catch him before he killed another person. So yes, please keep your guns if you need them and use them appropriately, but overall I think Hawaii is better off keeping our local population away from such dangerous tools.
Personally I have never felt the need to own a gun and survived many decades without unnecessary fear. But I do have a couple dogs with very loud barks and strong jaws, and if need be there's lots of stuff lying around that could easily be a weapon (chairs/ bricks/ tilapia) Of course the best defense is to avoid trouble and get away when you see it coming and keep in mind that testosterone can be a poison.
