Mayoral, Council 4 & 5 forum Saturday in Pahoa

Five of the nine Democratic Party candidates for Mayor of Hawaii will discuss issues important to the Big Island public in a two-hour session beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday in Pahoa. The forum will also feature the candidates for County Council Dist. 4 from 1 to 2 p.m. and candidates for County Council Dist. 5 from 4 to 5 p.m. The public is invited to these free events aimed at enlightening Puna's voters on their candidates, the issues and their visions.

Peter Hoffmann, a former County Council Chair; Wendell Ka’ehu’ae’a, perennial candidate; former Mayor Harry Kim; Wally Lau, former Kona managing director in the current administration; and first-time candidate Shannon McCandless will field questions from District 4 members of the Hawaii County Democratic Party. HCDP Dist. 4 is sponsoring the event.

Dist. 4 Council candidates Michael Bernard, Madie Greene and Eileen Ohara have accepted invitations to participate beginning at 1. Incumbent Dist. 5 Councilman Dan Paleka will face challenger Jen Ruggles in the final hour of the forum begininning around 4 p.m..

Pahoa businessman Dean Kelley, co-owner of Pahoa Used Bookstore, will moderate the Saturday, July 16 program at Pahoa Community Center, also known as Pahoa Neighborhood Facility, in the heart of downtown Pahoa on Kauhale Street behind the banks.
