Rite of passage Puna-style

I've only seen one big centipede while living in Puna and it was in the house! It must have crawled under the door because it was covered in dust. He was quickly a gonner. I've seen several itty bitty ones while digging in the dirt, but they are so tiny I barely notice them. I think my chickens do a job keeping them down.

I've been bitten once when I lived on Oahu. I went to take the dogs out just before bed. I didn't even see it. I felt it run accross my foot before I felt the bite. Yeah, I freaked out. Nothing like feeling a centipede crawl aross your foot. The pain wasn't as bad as I heard it could be, but because this was right before bed I couldn't sleep because my foot was just throbbing. The only pain medicaton I had was nighttime cold medicine. Well, if you ever get bit, let me tell you, nighttime cold medicine works great! [] It will take the pain away and knock you out! [] The pain was gone by morning, but my foot was itchy for about week.
