For a cheap rat trap, try a 5 gallon bucket half filled with water, topped off with a covering of microwave popcorn. The rats climb in but they can't climb out.
Centipedes are part of the landscape, and although I've had many close calls, I've not yet been bit by one. Reminds me of an after surf (sundown) talk story session at Waialea decades ago. We were standing around in a circle (hehe) and I felt something crawling up my foot/leg. A quick shake and off scurried a rather large centipede. They called me "lucky f-ka" after that, for a couple years at least. As it turned out, I was the least lucky of the bunch, as several went on to pro surfing sponsorships.
