I find the local art world very welcoming, and there is much to do here art-wise. The monthly First Friday art event in Hilo is a must, as are shows at Wailoa Center, Volcano Art Center, and EHCC.
As long as we're all self-promoting... After 30 years as a graphic designer, I became an illustrator, writer, and watercolorist. I also dabble in paper-based jewelry and painted boxes. I sell through One Gallery in Hilo, Volcano Garden Arts in Volcano, and at the annual Paradise Studio Tours. Currently, I'm in the throes of contract negotiations for a middle-grade fantasy, but also published a scifi humor novel.
I also belong to a group called Puna TAG (Traveling Art Group). We meet once a month -- today in fact! -- to work on whatever we're working on and talk story about the local art scene. There's a group that meets Thursday mornings at the warm ponds. And there's a plein air group, too, that I believe goes out once a week. Oh, and there's HINA - Hawaii Island Network of Artists, a free group to join for artists started by VAC.
In my watercolors, I concentrate on island images: http://dsthornton.artistwebsites.com/
The scifi book is here: http://www.amazon.com/Marvin-Plotnik-Hil...615653901/ (I also have signed copies, natch. $10. Cheap.)
