Throwing the bullchit flag here. The codes are in place because some people somewhere sat down and decided, for everyone else, what is acceptable building material. It's different if you live in a high rise apartment building, or even a 3 story house, but those building codes also restrict you for materials if you're a do it yourselfer. Some people would rather build with their hands and not have to pay someone else. Freedom.
