I was scratching my head on that one also but my friend I borrowed the drill from insisted. I did give it a little 'rotation' to try widen a ways past 2in but doubt it got anywhere near 3in. I'm wondering still if the pipe cut down into the rock or folded in to fit. Either way, i've witnessed one attempt to push/breakthrough my gate with a truck and the poles/gate/chain/etc all held. Pretty sure my poles were 8ft and they're pounded about 3.5ft below the surface now at least 3ft into the solid pahoehoe...then filled with cement.
But yeah, good question? Anyone that can tell us? Poles 'sharp' enough to cut into pahoehoe? Idk.
Added: Oh theres also a nice size footing poured around the poles about 6in deep with 3ft diameter.
