The problem with gates is that criminals tend to climb over or go around. Haven't heard of too many burglars in wheelchairs or with canes. Plus, many people here seem to get tired of locking/unlocking their gate in the rain and eventually just leave it open - unless they are going to be gone for a day or two. It would be quite easy to watch a place and see the habits of the owner and determine when "closed gate" meant no one was home.
Don't put your house far back on your lot and make it impossible to view it from the road. Then all the burglar needs to do is slip behind your trees/bushes and no one sees them. And hiding a camera doesn't do anything to deter a burglar. Make sure they are visible and overlap in the coverage zones.
