I moved here to Hawaiian Acres in upper Puna district a little over a year ago with Verizon. It worked pretty good: had great phone reception and decent internet coverage, even being able to stream yoga videos on YouTube from time to time (no wind or rain)... just made a switch as my contract was up and I was sick of the $100+ a month bill, for not even unlimited minutes. Now I have AT&T on my parent's family plan, and I pay half the amount for decent coverage. I can still stream videos from YouTube in the back of the property on clear days, but I can't load as good from internet in my home, which is slightly frustrating as that is my 'computer' and how I get my news.. but hey, small price to pay to live in paradise 
I tried Mobi PCS before switching to another contract, but it did not work well for me here in Hawaiian Acres at all. I'm with Terracore, etc... wait until you get here before deciding, and check coverage maps for all providers before making any decisions.
