I don't doubt these experiences, but I've had leather couch and chair here always and loved them. It's true that pushing it tight up against a wall can be a problem in a damp house. In my current house, which has no mold problem, it's fine, and I have two leather couches now.
I don't care for fabric upholstery much.
Anyhow, it depends on how damp your house is.
I have certainly experienced the leather mold with bags, purses, and jackets that were stored in closets, in other houses, just the furniture got enough ventilation that it was fine. I guess I am lucky to have such a dry house now.
I've never wiped it down with any kind of fungicide. I'm amazed that the Luna climate is that different from Hilo.
So leather is not useless everywhere on the east side, but it is if you are living where everything molds.
