The wetter it is and the denser the vegetation, the worse they are. I have one acre and 2/3 of it is fairly landscaped and maintained. Hardly ever mosquitos except shortly after it's been raining for a long time. The other 1/3 acre is jungle and when I go in there, I get a cloud of mosquitos that swarm me. Fortunately, I think most people build up an immunity after awhile. While they swarm me I hardly ever get bit and when I do get bit, they aren't big, red, itchy welts like on the mainland. As long as you have jungle, you'll have mosquitoes. If you tame it somewhat and get rid of any standing water, they won't be as bad.
