One of the problems with our highly centralized form of government here in Hawaii is that there are so few opportunities for marginal candidates to run for lower level positions. In some municipalities dog-catcher is a job you have to run for and I can think of some current and past Puna candidates who I would rather elect for such a position.
On another thread Sativa points out how she and RJ were able to kick some non-profits out of the old police station and save 20 grand or so. This to me is and example of very local thinking and perhaps a little too much micromanagement because the election at hand is for County councilor who is supposed to me overseeing a roughly 400 million dollar budget. 20 grand is small peanuts in comparison and personally I would like to see someone involved in the bigger picture and asking questions about the larger line item expenses like police coverage, lawyer costs and lawsuit settlements than worrying about minutia.
