Earlier this year I installed a flip switch for our generator. It was less than $500 for the flip switch, wire, breaker and locking plug. I ran 35' of extra wire out of the flip switch so that I have the ability to move the generator around. I just have the extra wire looped up and it's hanging from the flip switch box.
I just sold our old generator and we purchased a new one that runs off of both gasoline and propane. If needed, I just plug it into the generator, power her up and flip the switch.
We are currently on a grid tie in solar system so if the power goes out, we lose power and that's why I installed the flip switch and purchased the generator.
