True story: About 5 years back, a fresh Pahoehoe flow was approaching the coast (back before the county started protecting us). My wife, my dog Bear (who followed my every step) drove out to the end of the road and parked with a few of the other locals.
My wife wasn't up for the 200 yard walk out to the flow front, so Bear and I trekked side-by-side on out to check the action.
Bear was hard to see; he is all black and it was getting dark. As I approached the flow front and greeted a fellow gawker, I turned around to find Bear and he was gone! After several minutes of calling him with no results, I stared back at the parking area and I spotted his black shadow amongst some headlights, nearly back to the car.
Bear didn't know what that Pahoehoe was, but he sure knew that he wanted no part of it, no matter that he was ditching his master!
