Traffic meltdown?

We got stuck just Pahoa side of the transfer station a little after 2:00 and did not move for almost 1 hour, but there were some cars and 2 ambulances Hilo bound every so often. We finally started moving close to 3:00 and when we got to the Shower intersection, there was a pickup Hilo bound in the middle with the driver's side front quarter thoroughly smashed in and hooked up to a tow truck. Did not see the other car. Seems like the problem was in the Pahoa-bound lane and the cops were only letting Hilo-bound traffic pass by.
