Isn't PGV basically a contractor for HELCO? Now that NextEra is in the driver's seat I expect a renewed interest in geothermal and undersea cables, etc. I don't know if you've been to NextEra's website or not. Along with their principal subsidiary FPL, they've been buying up power companies all over the country.
"Indeed, Connie Lau, president, CEO, and chairman of the boards of Hawaiian Electric and American Savings, said in Wednesday's announcement that selling to Juno Beach, Fla.-based NextEra allows the company to accelerate its clean energy plans. Its goal is to increase renewables to 65%, tripling solar and lowering customer bills by 20% by 2030." (The Street)
It's so easy to equate Lower Puna with Appalachia, but if you've ever lived in a place like that you'd realize that although the residents sacrifice much, they also gain much. Not only are their lights on and their gas tanks filled, but there's honest won food on the table and their kids have a chance of extricating themselves from abject poverty. Instead of complaining about the desecration of your paradise, offer other viable solutions to this downward spiraling destitution. What's your plan? Let's hear it. I need something to tell the Puna kids whose lives I influence on a daily basis. Please, don't reference Rodger Christie, we've been through all that; I don't really think they're going to buy the subsistence agriculture thing either, as many of their parents came from generations of that life.
