While the possibility that TMT won't be built here is a horrible loss for science, the local economy, etc, I'm thinking there might yet be a bit of silver lining:
If there is truly no Rule of Law, we can eliminate most County and State functions, and reduce our taxes to almost nothing. What's the point of a Governor or a Mayor or a Police Department if they're just going to stand around and collect a paycheck?
We don't even have to fire them all at once -- once investment dries up, they simply won't have anything to do, and since there's no penalty for not paying taxes (that pesky Rule of Law again) there won't be any money to pay them anyway.
