i'm in upper puna and i had a view. fireworks were going on starting from around 6 in the afternoon. i chose to wait till around midnight to see how intense it got. At 11:50 it started getting good. Many folks must have bought those big professional fireworks and were lighting them off. fireworks were popping in all directions. i could see good displays in volcano, glenwood, mtn view, keaau and hilo, and lots of noise and flashes in the clouds from pahoa side. i wasn't wearing a watch, but could tell when it was a minute or two around midnight. it was just awesome! we watched for another 15 - 20 minutes as it took awhile to wind down. some really good ones were launched in glenwood / eden roc about 15 minutes after the new year, too, for a nice finale.
