Truck Thief - Idiot? Or Genius?

The story begins with a set up that looks like yet another world's stupidest criminal saga:

A Hilo grand jury has indicted a 35-year-old Hilo man accused of stealing a deputy prosecutor’s pickup truck late last year.

I can almost hear the crook, assuming he's a fan of Turner Classic Movies mumble to himself:

Of all the pickup trucks in all the towns on this island, I gotta pick this one. Play it, Sam.

But then, the big twist at the end (SPOILER ALERT):

The Hawaii County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney has recused itself from Hashizaki’s case, since it is his employer.

(The court will fly prosecutors in from Kauai however. Can we assume the defendant will also enjoy the free services of a taxpayer funded court appointed attorney?)
