What terrible news, my condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim. The written report showed very little sympathy for the victim, yet gave many excuses for the driver, why?. I lived in waikaloa and know most of those roads quite well from riding myself. Many more bikers in that area than most other areas on our island, so its not as abnormal as it was written. The sun usually rises over mauna kea a bit later in the morning this time of year on that side. Bikes are more common at those hours in order for the riders to try and beat the heat as they say. Tourism could be our number one industry and we should be going above and beyond in making sure our visitors return home safely, rather than blaming them for not returning at all.
Its no secret that we need to protect our own, especially one of our boys in blue. Statements like "you don't usually see bicyclists in that area because it is so dangerous," is going above and beyond, we really don't have any safe roads on our isle for our bicyclists. To say the rising sun would have likely been in both the riders and drivers eyes without really knowing stinks badly to me. Very sad news, if its true? sadder statements by chief John Whitman, and atrocious reporting, which ever one is true. All just my opinions though.
