When I think about a generator, especially in Hawai'i two things come immediately to mind:
1. Reliability, you don't want to have problems when you live out in the boonies and your off-grid
2. Availability of service options...is there someone nearby (on island) that can help with any problems that may arise in the event you do need help with a fix/maintenance? For me this is crucial because I don't feel competent to do my own repairs on this type of device.
With the preceding two points in mind I recommend buying a Honda. They are probably the most reliable and also have plenty of businesses that can operate on such a machine on island. They are at the high end of the price range - but for good reason.
Best of luck whatever you decide.
