It is illegal to discriminate based on familial status, especially marital status, presence of children in the household, or source of income (welfare or SSD in particular).

This "landlord" needs to read up and both Hawaii and federal tenant law and anti-discrimination regulations before they get themselves in expensive trouble. Asking for family size and makeup is not legal, asking that all residents, including children, and the total number of residents be listed on the lease at time of signing is legal, but asking before renting is illegal, the courts have ruled that the only reason a landlord would ask that up front is if they did not want to rent to certain types of families such as single mothers or gay couples.
