if its old enough and off the ground you can usually remove the lower leaves and dead leaves still attached to let the trunks show (and thin out keiki and some of the trunks of needed)....
PS. the only difference between the variegated one and the indigenous one is the lack of thorns on the variegated one... sometimes they will revert back to being a solid green color, but the thorns will still be absent.
