May Day is Lei Day in Hawai'i
#13
After a long work day, and making my lei for ohana who are no longer here (one for dining room table to smell up the room), we have had a lovely Lei Day. Six (6) strand puakenikeni for Tutu and Papa at their graves, and one beer for my husband's grave (he hated to wear lei...6'5" Hawaiian doesn't wear lei, nor ever use an umbrella! SMH. Sorry, TMI & O/T).

We prepare for travel to Mauna A Wakea/Mauna Kea tomorrow. As we stop to "smell the flowers", may we all work together for a better tomorrow. Keiki and mo'opuna are duly briefed, and have made their ho'okupu.

As the day is ending, I'm listening to "Pua Lilia", which is one of our ohana favorites. The "pua" (flower), is not only a flower, but symbolic to a loved one, a dear one, a precious one, whose "scent" (uhane, spirit) will never leave us.

Leaving you with this, version, by the Sunday Manoa (Cazimero Brothers), as we prepare for tomorrow. Aloha ahiahi to all.

`Auhea wale `oe e ka ua
Ke nihi a`e nei i nĂ¢ pali
Ka helena o ia pua i `ako `ia
He popohe mai nei ia uka
Ia uka ho`i a`u e walea ai
Me ke `ala onaona o ku`u pua
He pua `oe na`u i lei mau ai
Ke `ala o ku`u pua lilia

Listen to the rain
Creeping silently along the cliffs
It looks as if this flower has been plucked
Shapely the upland
The very upland that I'll enjoy
With the sweet fragrance of my flower
You are a flower, always to wear as a lei
The fragrance of my lily blossom

(Danced this for my beloved Uncle Robert Keli'iho'omalu at his services. SO miss him still...[V])

Our keiki and mo'opuna are also na pua o Hawai'i.

Kaulana Na Pua o Hawai'i!

Aloha kakou, rest well, a hui hou.

ETA: "scent"/uhane explanation.
