Aloha, VI. It is my understanding that the "gin" appeasement came from long time owner of the Volcano House, Leo Lycurgus (his wife was my father's Godmother, and the man Alex Lancaster mentioned below, is our Uncle). Here is a brief on his (Leo Lycurgus) experience with "Tutu Pele". Other stories are easily found:

In my Tutu's opinion, and other Kupuna, like Aunty Iolani Luahine, and Aunty Emma DeFries, nothing will "appease" Pele, not even gin. It is HER will, and we just "pule" for protection and mercy. Being of her "line", we don't do the gin thing. We just pick her up if she's traveling as an old woman, or young beautiful maiden. (Keep an eye out for her white German Shepard type dog, too; if you see him, she is near...[]).

We do pack "hot cocoa and craka", drive to where you can see, and watch her beautiful power. Oh, the stories. (Apologies for the O/T, again.)

P.S. Don't waste the good gin, please. Make a martini instead! Or, in this case, a Sloe Gin Fizz...[]
