This situation has "shoulda, coulda" written all over it. Condolences to the family. I lost a family member to the ocean- it is a sudden, tragic event for all involved.
Most fishermen, including myself will always have rope and flotation device nearby....be it a cool, a sealed 5 gallon bucket, etc. Especially when fishing the cliffs of Puna, Ka'u, Hamakua, Hilo....kings landing especially.
Fishermen lost seldom take such precautions. Again, the surf was big that day and numerous civil defense warnings. Why in the world would he go fishing? And even more disturbing is the possibility that a 7 year old girl witnessed the whole thing. I hope this is not true.
