The African snails crawl over rat poo that has rat lungworm. They then crawl over everything, especially outdoor gardens, and they will climb papaya trees, leaving their infected slimy trail behind. It could be somebody clearing a lot nearby, set them off looking for better places. The salt in a bucket sounds like the best way to get rid of them.
