I have always felt safe on the BI, even when living in Puna (Waa Waa, right near where Dana was murdered); I feel even more so now that I live Pa'auilo Mauka (I'll admit, crime's a tad lower here). Flying for a Commuter for years, I've lived in a succession of several large cities. Washington DC, Denver, Miami, Atlanta, and Cleveland. I wasn't paid much and owed for College and Flight Training so I lived in the "rougher" areas of all those cities.
The one thing that I found universal in all of them (as well as in Hawaii) is that most Major/Violent crimes, typically happened insularly. Gang on Gang, Lover upon lover, inside the family, amongst drug users.....rarely was an innocent bystander murdered, or targeted. Yes the smaller crimes involved the innocent; Petty (or Grand) Larceny etc......as well as the occasional more major; mugging or rape (though this too usually involves a person the victim knows).
Just my .02.
Also, I for one appreciate our PD. I have brought cookies on several occasions to the Honoka'a PD. Good folks, they deal with the parts of society I, for one, am glad don't have to deal with.
Aloha all,

We're all here, because we're not all there!
