It sounds like owning a gun is less of a deterrent, and more of a valuable item worth breaking in for.

Years ago I lived next door to a cop in a state that had very loose gun laws and an official estimate that 4 out of every 5 homes had a firearm. My neighbor told me about busting a burglary ring that was following home people with NRA stickers in their windows from shopping malls. They then had entirely different people case the places for weeks, and a third crew would then break in when no one was home and steal all the guns. They never took anything else, no jewelry or electronics, just guns and ammo, even whole gun safes when they knew the family had left for vacation. The guns were used for a lot of crimes and the ring only got busted when a girlfriend got busted for a bad check and rolled over on the whole group to get off.
No honor among thieves I guess.
