They said in the recent Tribune article that Hoffman's charges included a gun violation, so I assume that the gun was unregistered etc. It may have been legally obtained however, in which case, the charges may be using a firearm in the commission of a felony, or something of that sort. When I heard the initial report on NPR they stated that two of the victims died from "a bladed instrument", but that statement has apparently been revised. Increasingly, both gun and drug laws are becoming irrelevant as both are manufactured in ways that out maneuver whatever laws may be in place at the moment.
