Kalakoa, to answer your " Funny, I didn't realize the "grid" connected East and West."
The whole island interconnected on the grid with transmission lines that encircle the island & go over Saddle (if you look up while driving the main highways, you can even see them)
Interesting side note: after PGV was forced into an emergency shut down when the transmission lines went down during TS Iselle, Kaloko & Hilo generation stations were powering the entire island, as all other production was also down (some due to high wind, some to to downed transmission lines, some maintenance)
There is much to learn about this island, luckily there are a lot of resources to study from....I am lucky DH had answers to your question!
