For many many years we have planted fruit producing tree's such as soursop and non grafted citrus and butter avo's in the median of Hiwy 11 to Kea'au to help feed whom ever was hungry .For many years people would pick the fruit to sell at the local farmers markets .Now comes the state with federal monies to clear all the tree's we have so diligently and probably illegally planted along this stretch of highway .
We now are planting the butter avo's and maintaining them ourselves along other roadways ( state and county ) to help feed future generations .
After the project is pau on Hwy 11 - we have potted butter avo's in 3 and 5 gallon pots to re plant along with wide leaf Ti for cooking and some dry land kalo for future generations .
We try to plant in public access areas where if a person knows where these tree's are - can help feed many who are hungry with little or no care and up keep .
If every one here in PW did the same exact thing - would have plenty foods including Ulu to help feed for the next generations .
And Aloha Dave do you have a garden where you live now and are you preserving what you grow - so during winters you have more home grown foods instead of relying solely on everything trucked in ?
In addition Aloha Dave - could you please donate some funds to the Food Basket in Hilo .
23 cents will feed a person 1 hot meal or a bag of donated canned goods for a day and it may be a deduction on your taxes .
