I totally agree with Shockwave...I've had the exact same experience with Ilagan and his minions, talking stink about Ruderman while not knowing the basics. I too voted for Ilagan twice, hoping to nurture a young leader. But what I was impressed with in the beginning, before his first election...that of admitting he didn't know about whatever issue I was asking him about and him saying "I'll have to research that and get back to you," became a joke by his second term. It was then I was seeing him saying that same thing over and over and apparently doing exactlly what he told me he WOULDN'T do, that is checking with his rightwing GOP stepfather and doing whatever he told him to do. So I've been disappointed in his maturation as a public leader, and he certainly is way out of his league thinking he should represent Puna in the state senate.
I believe Ilagan jumped into the State Senate race at the instigation of big ag folks in HNL. And that's the same cause that got Ruderman bumped from his Ag chairmanship. GMO, Monsanto, etc.
